ArborVitae School of Traditional Herbalism

New Paltz, NY

ArborVitae School of Traditional Herbalism is rooted in the holistic practice of herbal medicine and is conveniently located in New York City. Founded and directed by herbalists Claudia Keel and Richard Mandelbaum, RH (AHG), ArborVitae offers a full, three year professional program those wishing to pursue clinical herbal knowledge and practice. The core curriculum is consistent with AHG educational guidelines. Visiting faculty include top herbalists from around the world. The 1st year curriculum offers a comprehensive introduction to the art and science of herbal medicine, and stands as a strong foundation for further studies or as a basis for effective and knowledgeable home practice. Topics include: Medicine Making & Materia Medica; Holistic Assessment, Methods & Energetics; Body Systems, Bioscience & Western Medicine; and Botany & Plant Identification. The advanced 3 year program consists of the foundational year plus more clinically focused years 2 and 3, providing over 1100 hours of classroom instruction & clinical training. Qualified applicants can enter directly into year 2 or 3.

Topics include a Supervised Student Clinic; Applied Body Systems & Herbal Therapeutics; Botanical Actions, Formulation & Application; and Holistic Intakes with Pulse & Tongue Evaluation. ArborVitae draws upon the best of what New York City has to offer: excellent herb teachers from varied practices, diverse student and client populations, amazingly botanically diverse city parks and gardens, friendly herb shops, mugwort everywhere, and lots and lots of humor. We frequently take trips to visit the wild places within and outside the city, where we identify plants, indulge in the silence, and enjoy a school-wide camping trip. All of our teachers are practicing herbalists and teach from their direct experiences and observations. Our low-cost community herb clinic, staffed by our 3rd year clinical students under supervision of faculty, provides services both on-site and during fieldtrips to visit local NGOs, with mutual sharing of herbal knowledge and traditions. We also offer community classes throughout the year to support our mission of being a progressive community resource for increasing public access to comprehensive herbal knowledge and care. ArborVitae is dedicated to the memory of the herbalist William LeSassier, and honors his wisdom and teachings.
