HWB Bridges Road Community Garden
When people hear “community garden”, they often think of a place where individuals or families grow food for themselves alongside neighboring plots. We chose a different model – a piece of land where folks come together to grow plants, flowers, produce, nuts, berries, and fruits for the consumption of themselves and others. The goal is to be able to provide food for those in need – either through food pantries or others area of distribution.
Williamstown MA has an 11.2% poverty level and a school district with an increasing number of high needs families. The Elementary School started a food pantry for its families last year and as of this year, the Bridges Road Community Gardeners have taken responsibility for the Elementary School Garden as well. As we bring the longstanding garden back to life, we are working with community members and school staff to envision its future. Our current plan is to grow produce for distribution in the school’s pantry and to work with cafeteria staff to see what herbs and produce they can use for school lunches.
We plan to distribute what we grow to the school food pantry, local food pantries, and elder housing communities. Ideally, we will get constituents from these groups involved in the growing as well!
