Region: Mendocino area
Three years ago part of the farm we were given a space to have our medicine garden in was leased to Xa Kako Dile Indigenous women’s non-profit. Because of this, the garden area is shared. Currently we grow native and non-native medicinal plants on 4 rows and they grow native food and basketry plants on 4 rows. The entire area is a designated pollinator garden through Xerces Society. We donate 10% of our donations to them and provide 4 seasonal medicine baskets for the tribes with products we have made from our harvest. We also share in each other events and support each others efforts to learn, educate and create a community of reverence. Our current goals are to have more hands-on support in growing and maintaining the garden. We can use more volunteers!
The community needs are education, plant walks and youth activities. There is also a need for care kits for indigenous and hispanic populations and teenagers that are expressing interest but shy about connecting. I feel that working with the schools to extend the educational component would be beneficial.
